Designed by Pablo Saracho, the Mastodonts are the result of a desire to create toys that combine minimalistic design with mechanics. The goal was to develop a toy that is not only visually appealing but also encourages imaginative play and creativity. Saracho's vision was to use natural materials and create a toy that is 100% natural.
What sets the Mastodonts apart is their simplicity and versatility. Made entirely of beech wood and magnets, these toys have no plastic, paint, varnish, or glue. Each Mastodont consists of a single body that can be transformed into four different animals by changing the heads, mouths, and ears. The beauty of the design lies in the fact that the different animals are not visible until all the pieces are put together.
The production process of the Mastodonts is a testament to the designer's commitment to quality and sustainability. The toys are designed on paper and then translated into 3D software to ensure precision and functionality. A CNC machine is used to drill the wooden pieces from beech wood boards, which have been cut, planned, and sanded beforehand. The magnets are inserted into the wood by pressure, and each piece is finished with a wax made of olive oil and beeswax, providing a smooth and natural feel.
The Mastodonts come in a box made of poplar, with cardboard beds for the pieces. To maintain the toys, a cloth and a tin of wax are included. The design team, led by Pablo Saracho and Mayte Ruiz de Velasco, takes pride in producing the Mastodonts in Spain, allowing them to closely monitor the quality of each piece. The use of hi-tech CNC machinery ensures precision and consistency in production.
Since its launch in 2014, the Mastodonts have garnered attention and recognition for their unique design and commitment to sustainability. In 2015, the Mastodonts received the Silver A' Design Award in the Toys, Games, and Hobby Products category. This prestigious award recognizes the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated by the Mastodonts, showcasing their technical characteristics and artistic skill.
The Mastodonts are not just toys; they are an embodiment of the belief that design and nature can coexist harmoniously. With their minimalist design, natural materials, and endless possibilities for imaginative play, the Mastodonts are a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in the world of toys.
